Mother of Pearl
Mother of Pearl is a self-portrait and reconstruction of my teen years in which a common push-pull takes place. The pearls around my throat and wrists address the constraint and restriction felt when trying to become independent from a parent alongside the sexual awakening of an adolescent. This juxtaposition of suffocation and liberation is an interpretation of exquisite pain.

It takes inspiration from a quote taken from 'The Pink Glass Swan' by Lucy Lippard which says that it is "taken for granted that any woman who presents her nude body in public is doing so because she thinks she is beautiful" – I hope to confirm that the method of self portrait and suggestion of nudity is in this case the best way to fully translate the concept, as opposed to an exercise in vanity and narcissism.
